The BMW E46 is the fourth generation of the 3 Series compact executive cars produced by BMW, produced from 1998 to 2006. Below schematic shows the BMW 318i E46 Clutch Components Assembly and Parts Diagram. The clutch allows engine power to be applied gradually when a vehicle is starting out, interrupts power to the transmission to avoid gear clashing when shifting and prevents engine stalling when bringing the vehicle to a stop.
